Provider initiated preterm birth
Preterm birth may be planned when māmā/person and/or pēpē wellbeing is compromised and it is considered that early birth, instead of ongoing pregnancy, is safest for māmā/person and/or pēpē. Preterm birth for these indications may be referred to as medically-indicated, iatrogenic or provider-initiated. This section of Taonga Tuku Iho considers the main conditions that commonly contribute to provider-initiated preterm birth. For each condition, information and recommendations on identification of risk; prevention and modification of risk; management to optimise care and limit the need for preterm birth and; indications for preterm birth are included.
